Livestock farms must deal with the manure their animals generate. Animal manure is a valuable resource for crop fertility. It can improve soil quality and crop yields. It can also negatively impact water and/or air quality if not handled and stored properly. NRCS has conservation practices and technical information to help farmers with manure management. Proper management, storage and utilization of manure reduces the risk of contamination of surface and ground water resources.
When NRCS works with a producer to plan manure storage, handling, and/or utilization improvements, a Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plan (CNMP) is developed to address resource and management needs.
