On February 28, 2013, the first NRCS People’s Garden in the Caribbean Area was officially inaugurated at the Tropical Agriculture Research Station (TARS) in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico.
The Mayagüez People's Garden is a collaborative effort between NRCS, UPR Mayagüez, TARS, the UPR Agricultural Experiment Station, UPR Cooperative Extension Service, UPR Sea Grant, the Oeste Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD), Casa Belén, and Mayagüezanos Pro Salud y Ambiente. Project partners donated all the materials and supplies (plants, compost, etc.) to build this beautiful garden. We congratulate our NRCS Mayagüez Field Office, Ecological Sciences Division and MLRA Soil Survey Office employees for putting together an extraordinary event with our partners and co-workers.
In February 2014, our NRCS Mayagüez Service Center employees replanted their People’s Garden with pumpkins, tomatoes, cabbage, okra and herbs - embodying our motto of “Putting Conservation on the Land!”
Last year (2013), the Mayagüez People's Garden produced 275 pounds of fresh, high quality produce that was donated to Casa Belén Nursing Home in Mayagüez. For example, the July harvest included: eggplants, mangoes, peppers, plantains, herbs, passion fruit, and bread fruit.
