NRCS is offering the Sage Grouse Initiative to help private landowners improve and enhance sage-grouse habitat and the sustainability of working ranches and farms in the western United States. NRCS Farm Bill conservation programs, including the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) are helping ranchers improve habitat for the sage-grouse.

Greater Sage Grouse Habitat Conservation Strategy - Includes NEW February 2015 Greater Sage-Grouse Core Areas Map
Montana has developed a long-term sage-grouse habitat protection strategy that identifies “core” areas for sage-grouse populations in Montana. Sage-grouse are found in parts of 38 Montana counties but their populations tend to clump into smaller core areas which contain a majority of the birds. Higher priority will be given to Sage-Grouse Initiative applicants who have an NRCS approved grazing plan that addresses all threats to sage grouse and whose property is located in a core area.

Montana's SGI strategy addresses concerns/requirements in the following three documents. These documents require Adobe Reader. If you encounter any problems with the files provided on this page, please contact Technical Resources at 406-587-6822.
