NRCS Helps Prepare Youth for FFA and 4-H Success

Story by Amber Carson

The Red River County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD), with assistance from the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), recently held their annual FFA/4-H Field Day activities in Clarksville, Texas. Volunteers from the Red River County SWCD, NRCS-Paris resource team, Farm Service Agency (FSA) and the Texas Forest Service (TFS), partnered to make the event a success.

High school agriculture teachers work with teams of students throughout the year on their land judging and forestry skills. The annual field day helps students prepare for upcoming FFA and 4-H events, including district and state competitions. A total of 80 students attended the field day from school districts across Red River County. Plaques were awarded to the winners and participants were treated to a Texas-sized hamburger cookout.

First place in the Forestry Contest was awarded to Red River County 4-H Team #1 which included team members Ronnie Potts, Presley Spoonmore and Meredith Wooten. The Forestry Contest high scoring individual was Ronnie Potts. First place in the Forestry FFA Teams Contest was awarded to Avery Team #1 which included team members Hunter Morris, Dustin Travillion, Rein Brewer and Roscoe Swabb. The Forestry FFA Teams Contest high scoring individual was James Glover. First place in the Land Judging Contest was awarded to Avery FFA Team #2 which included team members Kayleigh May, Ashlee Booth, Whitney Kelsoe and Cassie Hausler.
