2010 Texas Earth Team Volunteer Program Team of the Year

2010 Texas Earth Team Volunteer Program Team of the Year

Story by Dee Ann Littlefield

The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Texas likes to annually recognize a resource team, Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) or Resource Conservation & Development council that has had a group of people contribute the most earth team volunteer hours. Some teams turned in impressive results for fiscal year 2010 400 and 500 hours of combined time for their group.

However, this year the Earth Team Volunteer Program Team of the Year goes to the Paris Resource Team in Zone 4. They turned in the most of any team -- 837 hours. These hours actually all came from the Clarksville office, from one volunteer Mr. Russ Durrough.

Mr. Durrough retired from the NRCS as a soil conservationist in 1999. He and his wife enjoy volunteering their time for various organizations around Clarksville. In 2003 he became an Earth Team Volunteer and began spending his time helping the Red River County SWCD and the NRCS personnel in the office. He comes in to the office every day offering his expertise, working with landowners reviewing their soil maps, helping with soil sample information, getting job sheets and soils maps for the field office to use during the planning process, as well as other office duties such as answering the phone, vehicle reports or anywhere else he is needed.

The NRCS in Texas thanks Mr. Durrough for his dedication to getting more conservation on the ground, even in his retirement years. His efforts have earned the Paris Resource Team the Texas Earth Team Volunteer Team of the year. We also thank the staff in the Clarksville office, District Conservationist Justin Parks, SWCD Secretary Amy Hammett, and Soil Conservationist Doug Vick.

Russ Durrough enjoys spending his time outdoors and helping landowners improve and conserve their natural resources.

Mr. Durrough volunteered 837 hours in fiscal year 2010, helping the Paris Resource Team earn the 2010 Earth Team Volunteer Program Team of the Year title.
