Collection Event Targets Hazardous and Electronic Waste

Story by Bertha Venegas

Residents of Wilson County disposed over 7000 pounds of hazardous and electronic waste free of charge during a collection event on September 25th at the City Park in Poth. Numerous items were accepted including household cleaners and chemicals, engine oil, vehicle batteries, tires, cooking grease, computers, televisions, microwaves and other electronic appliances. The items will be properly disposed of or recycled.

Maintaining a clean, healthy environment for our area is a high priority said Alamo Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Chairperson Karen Opiela. We are glad to have been able to assist the residents of Wilson County.

This collection event was made possible by Wilson County, the Alamo RC&D Area, Inc., a non-profit organization, and the San Antonio River Authority. The event was financed with funds from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) through the Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG).

The event was part of the National RC&D Week celebration for the Alamo RC&D. The Alamo RC&D Area is one of 22 RC&D Areas in Texas serving Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Frio, Guadalupe, Kendall, Kerr, Medina and Wilson Counties in Central and South Texas.

The Alamo RC&D Council members are volunteers and include local, civic, appointed, and elected officials. It is a non-profit entity that works in partnership with the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) through a federal coordinator.
