Final Field Review for the Caddo Parish, LA Soil Survey Update

Final Field Review for the Caddo Parish, LA Soil Survey Update

Story by Tiffany Roberson

A final field review for the Caddo Parish soil survey update project was conducted from July 6 to July 9, 2010. The Nacogdoches Soil Survey Office Soil Scientists Alan Peer, Roel Guerra Jr., Don Sabo, Ricky Lambert, and Tiffany Roberson, and visiting Soil Scientist Sara Russell, conducted the review with Marc Bordelon and Joel Bolin, Soil Scientists from the Ruston, Louisiana Soil Survey Office; along with Jerry Daigle, State Soil Scientist of Louisiana; Charles Guillory, Assistant State Soil Scientist of Louisiana; Charlie Henry, Soil Scientist from the Louisiana State Office; and Edgar Mersiovsky Senior Soil Scientist from Little Rock, Arkansas. The group visited 11 field sites in Caddo Parish to discuss and evaluate the different soils identified, as well as, soil composition, landforms, taxonomy of the soils, lab data results, and land use capabilities.

Update work in Caddo Parish began in 2002, with the final field work and lab sampling completed this year. Since January, 2010, over 130,000 acres have been mapped and 35 soil transects have been collected to determine the soil composition and to develop soil interpretations. All soil delineations were reviewed and specific soils were selected for evaluation in this final field review.

The original Caddo Parish soil survey was published in 1978 and was developed using aerial photographs. The completion of the updated soil survey was aided by the use of LiDAR (a system that uses aircraft and a combination of lasers, GPS, INS to generate digital elevations), elevation data, digital raster graphics elevation, and ortho-photo imagery. Taxonomic classifications of the soils were reviewed and updated based on the 11th edition of Soil Taxonomy. The main objectives of the project were to update the Caddo Parrish soil survey to meet Soil Survey Geographic standards and to make the survey available to the public through the Soil Data Mart and Web Soil Survey. The results of the study will enable NRCS to make better soil interpretations and gain a better understanding of the soils for various land uses and conservation practices.

The updated soils information will be available on the web at the Web Soil Survey at http://websoilsurvey.nrcs.usda.gov/app/HomePage.htm or the Soil Data Mart at http://soildatamart.nrcs.usda.gov/ after the final correlation and approval by the State Soil Scientist of Louisiana.
