Wildlife and Recreational Management Clinic held

Wildlife and Recreational Management Clinic held

Story by Dan Wilson, NRCS District Conservationist

The Zone 4 Wildlife and Recreational Management Clinic was held Oct. 7 at the Village Creek State Park located outside Lumberton.

Students were asked questions from categories such as, wildlife species and habitat management, plant identification, wildlife food preference, biological facts, game laws and safety. There also was a compass and pacing course.

Several Hardin County schools participated. Hardin-Jefferson Team 1 finished first among Hardin County schools. Team members were Dalton Horn, Kaley Sanford and Sean Ryan. Their score was 140. Silsbee Team 1 was the second place finisher with a score of 111. Team members were Autumn Louviere, Beth Condrain, Thomas Burnett and Sean Johnson. Silsbee Team 2 also put a team in the top three from the county. John Howell, Stephanie Sirmers and Alex Burnett combined their efforts scoring 108 points. Teams came from as far away as Nacogdoches County to participate. The weather was excellent and once again the turnout was great with 143 students and 51 sponsors who fielded 42 teams for the competition.

This annual event was hosted by the Lower Neches Soil & Water Conservation District which served a barbeque lunch. The event also was made possible by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) employees who volunteered as graders and judges. Congratulations and thanks to all the team members from our county schools for coming out and showing what Hardin county can do.
