San Patricio SWCD Honors NRCS for 75th Anniversary

San Patricio SWCD Honors NRCS for 75th Anniversary

Story by Ellen Park, San Patricio SWCD

It was no prescribed burn that caused smoke to swirl in Sinton the night of the San Patricio Soil and Water Conservation Districts 2010 Annual Banquet. During the banquet, the district directors honored Natural Resources Conservation Service employees with a cake made of seventy-five cupcakes to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the USDA NRCS. Each cupcake held a candle that brightly proclaimed each year that NRCS has been a part of the legacy that has a distinguished place in Texas history of helping people to help the land.

Sonny Vela, Program Liaison, Leroy Wolff, District Conservationist and Sammy Guerra, Soil Conservationist provided the air to extinguish the flames. Although winded, Wolff was able to remark that he appreciated the efforts of the San Patricio SWCD and hopes to continue the rich working relationship between the SWCD and NRCS. A soft spoken Guerra noted that, It is a humbling experience to work with an agency that helped to solve a national crisis that began in the years of the Dust Bowl.

The event celebrated not only the 75th anniversary of the NRCS; but also the accomplishments of students from San Patricio and Aransas counties who participated in the poster and essay contest. San Patricio SWCD awarded the Outstanding Farmer, Outstanding Business and Outstanding Wildlife Conservationist awards to local district co-operators.

Barbecue was served to 175 guests and for dessertof course cupcakes!
