Lamar County SWCD Hosts Annual Wildlife Contest

story by Hillary Murray, Soil Conservationist

The Lamar County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) recently hosted this year's wildlife contest for students in Lamar, Delta, and Red River counties. More than 70 FFA and 4-H students participated in the contest held at Pat Mayse Lake.

With assistance from the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Delta and Red River SWCD's, Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board, and Texas Parks & Wildlife, students were tested in areas such as plant identification and preferences, hunting safety and laws, wildlife habitats, and wildlife facts and techniques.

After the contest, students were treated to a barbeque lunch provided by the Lamar County SWCD, Northeast Texas RC&D, Lamar County Farm Bureau and the Red River Valley Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation.
