Biography for Director Edwin Almodóvar
Edwin is currently the State Conservationist for the Caribbean Area, with the United States Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). He is currently stationed in Hato Rey, PR. He started with the NRCS in May of 2000 as a student intern in Evansville, Indiana.
He was born in Aguadilla, PR, and was raised in el Poblado San Antonio de Aguadilla. Edwin is married to Glenda L. Rivera; she is native to Jayuya, PR. They both have two beautiful children – Thais Marie and Edwin Yadier.
Edwin graduated from the University of Puerto Rico – Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez, in 2000. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Agriculture Science in Mechanical Technology in Agriculture.
Edwin is a product of the Student Career Experience Program (SCEP). He started working with NRCS as a SCEP student in Evansville, IN. He later was offered a permanent position in Lafayette, IN, as a Soil Conservationist in 2001. While working in Lafayette, Edwin was deployed overseas to Iraq with his US ARMY Reserve unit. Upon his return from a 15-month deployment, he accepted a District Conservationist position in Kalamazoo, MI. Before joining the Caribbean Area, he was leading the Great Lakes Allegheny Team in Batavia, NY as an Assistant State Conservationist for Field Operations.
Edwin has also served as the Hispanic Emphasis Program Manager (HEPM) for the states of Indiana, Michigan and New York. Edwin has been an active member in the National Organization of Professional Hispanic NRCS Employees since 2001. He has served the organization on multiple committees, including the National Council.
Edwin is an ARMY veteran. He has served in Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom during 2003-04, and was awarded a Purple Heart while on tour.
As part of his Caribbean Area responsibilities, he is the Federal Co Chair for the Caribbean Regional Planning Bodies, lead member to the Puerto Rico Food Security - Agriculture and Urban Conservation Task Force, member of the Caribbean Area Landscape Cooperative Conservation, and advisor to the US Coral Reef Task Force.
Edwin enjoys listening to music, and plays the guitar, el cuatro and percussion instruments. He also enjoys baseball and spending time with his family.
