People's Gardens at Plant Materials Centers

USDA The People's GardenSecretary Vilsack began the The People's Garden Initiative - named in honor of President Lincoln's description of USDA as the "People's Department" - in 2009 as an effort to challenge employees to create gardens at USDA facilities. It has since grown into a collaborative effort of over 700 local and national organizations all working together to establish community and school gardens across the country. The simple act of planting a garden can help unite neighborhoods in a common effort and inspire locally-led solutions to challenges facing our country - from hunger to the environment.

Plant Materials Centers (PMCs) from across the country have installed People's Gardens from coast to coast in support of the The People's Garden initiative.  Plantings include vegetable gardens, pollinator enhancement gardens, and native and drought tolerant field plantings.

An important aspect of The People’s Garden effort, which is often overlooked, is sustainable landscapes.  PMCs have worked with thousands of native plants and many of the Plant Materials Programs conservation plants are useful in creating aesthetic, low water-use, sustainable landscapes.  Documents developed by Plant Materials Centers are useful in providing solutions for improving plant communities, conserving soil, and improving water quality for homeowners and municipalities.  These documents can be found in the following locations.

See Conservation Plant Releases for information on plants released by the Plant Materials Program.
