Seasonal residue management is the practice of managing the amount, orientation, and distribution of crop and other plant residues on the soil surface during a specified period of the year, while planting annual crops on a clean-tilled seedbed, or when growing biennial or perennial seed crops.

Purposes and Benefits

  • Residue cover prevents soil erosion and protects water quality
  • Residue improves soil tilth and adds organic matter to the soil
  • Fewer trips and less tillage reduces soil compaction and improves air quality
  • Time, energy and labor savings are realized with fewer tillage trips
