A controlled temperature anaerobic digester is a managed temperature waste treatment facility which manages and treats animal wastes prior to introduction on farm lands. By-products of the process, such as methane and heat, can be utilized on-site to reduce energy costs.
Purposes and Benefits
- Protects surface and groundwater quality by reducing loading of nutrients, organics, pathogens, and other contaminants associated with animal manure and other wastes
- Allows timely application of wastes when field conditions are right, minimizing runoff into streams or water bodies
- Reduces fertilizer costs and nutrient losses
- Nutrients in the effluent can be used to fertilize crops, improving nutrient management and reducing costs
- Biogas produced during the digestive process can be extracted and used as an energy source
- Reduces greenhouse gases and improves air quality by eliminating odors
- Reduces pathogens
