NRCS Employee Outreach

As USDA-NRCS employees, we are committed to delivering our programs and services to all customers, fairly and equitably. With our many conservation partners, we work to reach the traditionally underserved and socially disadvantaged farmers to promote their trust and full participation in conservation programs.


Definition of Terms

Beginning farmer or rancher:
An individual or entity who: (a) Has not operated a farm or ranch, or who has operated a farm or ranch for not more than consecutive 10 years. (This requirement applies to all members of an entity.); and (b) Will materially and substantially participate in the operation of the farm or ranch.
(a) A person with direct or indirect gross farm sales of not more than $100,000 in each of the previous two years (to be increased beginning in fiscal year 2004 to adjust for inflation using Prices Paid by Farmer Index as compiled by NASS), and (b) Has a total household income at or below the national poverty level for a family of four, OR less than 50 percent of county median household income in each of the previous two years (to be determined annually using Commerce Dept. Data).

Reporting Outreach in New Jersey

NRCS employees participate in outreach activities throughout the State, presenting the conservation message in many venues: workshops, field tours and demonstrations, agricultural meetings, classrooms, and more! Working with other groups and individuals, we are able to amplify the message and contact more potential customers.
