USDA employees met to glean at Sun Valley OrchardsFourteen employees from NRCS Hammonton, Vineland, Woodstown, and Somerset were among the 44 employees who assembled at Sun Valley Orchards in Swedesboro, Gloucester County, New Jersey on Wednesday, August 10, 2011, to glean the fields in support of the Feds Feed Families campaign in New Jersey. Sun Valley owner Russ Marino and the non-profit organization Farmers Against Hunger joined employees from Farm Service Agency (FSA), Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), National Agricultural Statistics (NASS), Rural Development (RD) and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to gather fresh produce from about 30 acres of fields of yellow squash and zucchini.

all in a morning's work - squash gleaned on August 10Farmers Against Hunger was able to fill two large trucks with the donations of that day. The 4,000 pounds of gleaned squash, added to Russ Marino’s personal donation of 600 pounds of eggplant and 4,800 pounds of pickling cukes, plus the 1,360 pounds of fresh sweet corn donated collectively by FNS Deputy Regional Administrator Diana Limbacher, NJ-NASS Director Troy Joshua, NRCS State Conservationist Don Pettit, FSA State Director Paul Hlubik, and RD State Director Howard Henderson, combined to provide Farmers Against Hunger with 10,760 pounds of produce to distribute to local food banks. The Campaign goal for New Jersey was set at 1,072 pounds.
