Census of Agriculture and National Resources Inventory Comparisons

Census of Agriculture and National Resources Inventory Comparisons for Comparable Cropland and Conservation Reserve Program Statistics

Description

This table compares cropland and Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) statistics from the Census of Agriculture with those from the National Resources Inventory (NRI) for 1997.

Sources

Source: National Resources Inventory, 1997
Distributor: USDA-NRCS-RIAD
Reliability:
NRI sample data are generally reliable at the 95% confidence interval for state and certain broad substate area analyses. Generally, analyses that aggregate data points by smaller geographic areas and/or more specific criteria result in fewer data points for each aggregation and therefore less reliable estimates. NRI maps reflect national patterns rather than site- specific information.

Definitions

Conservation Reserve Program (CRP):
A Federal program established under the Food Security Act of 1985 to assist private landowners to convert highly erodible cropland to vegetative cover for 10 years. [NMCSP]

Conservation Reserve Programs or Wetlands Reserve Programs:
See Cropland in the Conservation Reserve Programs (CRP) or Wetlands Reserve Programs (WRP) in published reports.

Cropland:
A Land cover/use category that includes areas used for the production of adapted crops for harvest. Two subcategories of cropland are recognized: cultivated and noncultivated. Cultivated cropland comprises land in row crops or close-grown crops and also other cultivated cropland, for example, hayland or pastureland that is in a rotation with row or close-grown crops. Noncultivated cropland includes permanent hayland and horticultural cropland. [NRI-97]

Cropland, harvested:
This category includes land from which crops were harvested or hay was cut, and land in orchards, citrus groves, vineyards, nurseries, and greenhouses. Land from which two or more crops were harvested was counted only once.

Cropland, other:
This category includes cropland not harvested and not grazed which was used for cover crops or soil improvement crops, land on which all crops failed, cultivated summer fallow, idle cropland, and land planted in crops which were to be harvested after the census year.

Cropland, total:
This category includes land from which crops were harvested or hay was cut; land in orchards, citrus groves, vineyards, and nurseries and greenhouses products; cropland used only for pasture or grazing; land in cover crops, legumes, and soil-improvement grasses; land on which all crops failed; land in cultivated summer fallow; and idle cropland.
