This painted relief map was created using GTOPO30 elevation data from the U.S. Geological Survey. More information on this dataset can be found at the following website: The elevation data was transformed into a painted relief image using a process documented by Jeffery Nighbert of the Bureau of Land Management. This process was presented as a poster at the '95 ESRI User Conference. The State Soil Geographic (STATSGO) Database was used to overlay water bodies on the painted relief map.

Cautions for this Product:
The elevation data used to make this map has a coarse resolution (30 second arcs) and should not be used at less than regional scales.

The State Soil Geographic (STATSGO) database is made by generalizing detailed soil survey data. The mapping scale is 1:250,000 (1:1,000,000 for Alaska). The level of mapping is designed to be used for broad planning and management uses covering state, regional, and multi-state areas. STATSGO map units average from 7,000 to 60,000 acres in size and have a minimum size of 1,544 acres.
