Application of Soil Data Viewer and ArcGIS in Technical Soil Services

Overview

This course provides an introduction into using the capabilities of ArcGIS 9.2 and SDV 5.2 for delivery of Technical Soil Services. Participation in the course includes:

  • Lectures
  • Discussions
  • Demos
  • Problem solving using provided typical business scenarios
  • Course includes a post session take home project

Objectives

The overall learning objectives are that at the end of the session participants will be able to:

  • Use ArcGIS to prepare spatial data for SDV.
  • Use MS Access to prepare tabular data for SDV.
  • Utilize Soil Data Viewer Techniques for:
    • Resource assessment
    • Conservation planning
    • Marketing and educational activities.
  • Ncorporate SDV output into further analysis of resource concerns.

Format 

  • The course will be presented via DL (distance learning) using Adobe Connect Pro. Audio will be through the computer or by teleconference. Connection information will be provided to participants. No travel involved.
  • Course must be “attended” on an individual basis, one computer-one person.
  • Pre and post course testing for measurement of learning will be done through Aglearn or other web-based means. Instructions will be provided to participants

Prerequisites and Recommendation

Must have completed the ESRI Introduction to ArcGIS I course online or at NCGC, or be a confident ArcGIS user. User must have access to ArcGIS 9.2 and SDV 5.2.

Duration

5 days. (25 hours of contact time)

Target Audience

Soil Resource Specialists, State Office Soils Staff, GIS Specialists, others who will be SDV users in delivery of Technical Soil Services. .

Self Paced Option

The course handbook and data files will be made available about 5 weeks prior to the scheduled course session. Participants have the option of completing the course on their own, self-paced prior to the scheduled dates. An instructor/mentor is assigned to each participant in this course and they will review all completed exercises and case studies. If unable to complete any part of the course self-paced, then the participant must “attend” the full course session.

Enrollment

  • Go to AgLearn to request enrollment in Soil Technology – Application of Soil Data Viewer and ArcGIS in Technical Soil Services(NRCS-NSSC-000001).
  • A pilot plus four sessions are scheduled by time zone (east, pacific, central, mountain) for FY09 so you must be aware of the start and end times for each in relation to where you are located before enrolling. Start times are 9:00 AM and the daily sessions run until approximately 2:30-4:00 PM (varies day to day) in the designated time zone for that session. For example, a start and end time of 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM pacific is 12:00 PM to 7:00 PM for those attending the pacific session from the east.
  • Enrollment is limited to 15 within each session.
