Hydrology Training Series Module 110 Structure Hydraulics (NRCS-NEDC-000061)

Overview

This module presents information NRCS field office personnel need to know about structural hydraulics in order to understand and explain the functioning of small water control structures such as drop spillways, pipe inlets, hood inlets, and culverts. The module discusses the hydraulic factors that influence selection of type of structure and factors that affect the head (stage)-discharge relationships needed to determine capacity or size of spillways.

Objectives

Upon completion of this module, participants will be able to:

  • describe the two key hydraulic parameters that affect the selection of the most economical structure type, providing site conditions are adequate.
  • list the factors that affect the functioning or head-discharge relationship for four common NRCS conservation structures.

Prerequisites

None

Duration

Participant should take as long as necessary to complete the module. Training time for this module is approximately three hours.

Target Audience

This module is intended for all NRCS personnel who use hydraulics in their work.
