This course is an introductory course for supervisors. The supervisory skills included in this training are: leadership styles, effective communication and supervisory responsibilities with respect to operations management, employee development, professionalism, and employment/employee relations issues. Focus is given to ensuring competencies are built according to Office of Personnel Management�s (OPM) Leadership Competencies.
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
Describe the traits, characteristics and other attributes of effective leaders, and select the appropriate leadership style for the situation.
Identify effective communication methods and demonstrate effective communications in the Supervisory role.
Perform the responsibilities as a supervisor in employee development.
Explain the five functions of management as related to policy and the functions of an NRCS work unit; including business plans, effective meetings, and FOIA.
Explain the steps in the Life Cycle of Employment and demonstrate the supervisory skills necessary to accomplish the required responsibilities.
Document deficiencies and communicate them to an employee effectively; determine appropriate action to resolve employee issues; and recognize the major bodies of review and the Supervisor�s role in defending an action and/or management decision.
Identify the characteristics of professionalism and define the role of a supervisor in professionalism.
Participants must have completed �Managing for Excellence� course or its equivalent.
3.5 days (Tuesday 8:00 a.m. to Friday 12:00 p.m.)
Employees within their first year of being in supervisory position. (OPM
recommends that supervisors receive supervisory training within the
first 12 months of their supervisory appointment.).
