Indiana NEWS MEDIA ADVISORY – issued May 18, 2012

Event: A one hour event commemorating the 150th anniversary of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), established May 15, 1862 by President Abraham Lincoln. Jane Hardisty, State Conservationist, Natural Resources Conservation Service and Julia Wickard, State Executive Director, Farm Service Agency will co-moderate the event. Lieutenant Governor Becky Skillman will make remarks about the importance of USDA to Hoosier agriculture, natural resources, and rural development.

The public benefits of “The People’s Department”—as Lincoln called it—will be described in context of 150 years of progress in providing food and fiber for America and more specifically Indiana.

In addition to the Lieutenant Governor, the heads of the following USDA agencies will make a brief statement:
• Jane Hardisty, State Conservationist, Natural Resources Conservation Service
• Julia Wickard, State Executive Director, Farm Service Agency
• Sharon Zapata, Acting State Director, Rural Development
• Ronie Griffin, Director, Risk Management Agency

Heads of other agencies and special guests will be introduced.
