Special emphasis programs are an important part of the civil rights program at the Natural Resources Conservation Service. The special emphasis program managers assist Mississippi's State Conservationist in ensuring that equal opportunity is present in all aspects of NRCS programs and services. The State Conservationist and staff provide leadership to identify the underrepresented and ensure that positive actions are being taken to address problem areas. Special Emphasis Program Managers provide advice and assistance to the State Conservationist and management staff to help meet civil rights program goals and objectives. Special Emphasis Program Managers also assist the State Conservationist with effective communications among all persons involved with the civil rights responsibilities.
Black History Month - In 1926, Dr. Carter Woodson instituted a week-long celebration of African American contributions to American history. Today, we celebrate the entire month of February as Black History Month.
National Women’s History Month was established by presidential proclamation to draw attention to and rectify the limited focus on women in the study of U.S. history.
National Volunteer Week Earth Day - April 22
Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month - Established by congressional proclamation in 1979 as Asian Heritage Week, President George Bush signed legislation into law in 1992 that made May Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month.
Memorial Day - Last Monday of May
Pride Month - The month of June was chosen for LGBT Pride Month to commemorate the Stonewall riots, which occurred at the end of June 1969. As a result, many pride events are held during this month to recognize the impact LGBT people have had in the world.
National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 - October 15)was started in 1968 as National Hispanic Heritage Week and incorporated September 15 and 16, the independence days for Central American nations and Mexico, respectively. In 1988, it expanded to National Hispanic Heritage Month.
National Disability Employment Awareness Month - In 1988, presidential proclamation designated October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month in order to promote and encourage the full integration of people with disabilities into the workforce.
National Native American Heritage Month - The term "Native American" incorporates hundreds of different tribes and approximately 250 languages. Conceived in 1976 as Native American Week, it became National Native American Heritage Month in 1990 by presidential and congressional proclamation.
