USDA Offices Celebrate 150th Anniversary, Donate 892 Pounds to Food Bank

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) offices of Columbia donated 892 pounds of food and $175 dollars to the Food Bank of Central and Northeast Missouri May 15 as a way to recognize and celebrate the agency’s 150th anniversary.  Four agencies, the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Farm Service Agency (FSA), Rural Development (RD) and National Agriculture Statistics Service (NASS) participated in the week-long food drive.

Established in 1862 by President Abraham Lincoln, USDA works on food, agriculture, economic development, science, natural resource conservation and a host of issues.  USDA still fulfills Lincoln’s vision, touching the lives of every American, every day.

“We wanted to find a unique way to celebrate our sesquicentennial while also involving the community,” NRCS State Conservationist J.R. Flores said.  “Having worked with the Food Bank of Central and Northeast Missouri in the past, we were aware of the growing need for donations in our area.  With that in mind a goal was set to collect 150 pounds of food, in honor of our anniversary.  USDA employees answered the challenge and came up with nearly six times what we hoped to receive.”

Nearly 150 USDA employees, including state and field office staff, gathered in the hallway of the Parkade Center as Flores discussed USDA’s rich history and commitment to helping the community.  Food Bank representative Todd Pridemore accepted the USDA’s donations.  The Food Bank of Central and Northeast Missouri distributes nearly 28 million pounds of food to 135 agencies and 138 schools in 32 counties.

The USDA is looking to the future Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack said during a ceremony in Washington D.C.  In the years to come, employees will help address the changing needs of agriculture and rural America and will continue to help provide a safe, ample food supply for the  nation and the world.”
