Source Water Protection Initiative (SWP)

USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service will provide close to $250,000.00 in technical and financial assistance for interested participants to help improve and protect Minnesota’s vulnerable drinking water resources used by public water suppliers. The EQIP Source Water Protection Initiative allows for financial assistance of conservation practices to eligible participants. These conservation practices help reduce or minimize the level of a contaminant found in drinking water, and reduce the potential risk of a health related contaminant from entering a drinking water source.

Project Area and Prioritization

This Initiative has project areas that include Wellhead Protection Areas (Land within a Drinking Water Supply Management Area (DWSMA) boundary that has been classified as High or Very High in Vulnerability by the Minnesota Department of Health) and Priority Surface Water Protection Areas.

The first step in seeking NRCS assistance is to call your local USDA Service Center and make an appointment with NRCS staff to see if you are located in the project area or if you may be eligible for other opportunities. NRCS will help you identify the natural resource problems and opportunities on your farm. You can work with NRCS to develop a conservation plan. Financial assistance from NRCS Farm Bill programs or other Federal, State and local conservation programs may be available to help fund some of the conservation practices outlined in your plan.
