Rice Lake Boys and Girls Club Embrace Natural Resources

Helping people help the land is something that NRCS does on a daily basis.  Recently, NRCS expanded its passion for helping others by partnering with the White Earth Natural Resources Department (WENRD) and the Rice Lake Boys and Girls Club.

Rice Lake Boys and Girls Club assist with tree plantingWhen the idea of planting trees at the White Earth Nation came up, WENRD saw an opportunity to recruit young people.  As a result,  the Rice Lake Boys and Girls Club were contacted to assist with tree planting in Rice Lake.

Dawn Kier, WENRD Ag/Wetland Manager  utilized her Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) contract for an educational opportunity to teach young kids the importance of planning for the future. The thought was that by involving the Boys and Girls Club members with a hands-on- tree planting they would develop a better appreciation for natural resources.

For the last several years, WENRD and NRCS have been working together on fruit tree plantings, using the EQIP program in the White Earth Nation.  The tree plantings have a multipurpose use; subsistence farming, erosion control, wildlife and pollinator habitat and, where designed, will be used for energy efficiency as shelterbelts and windbreaks.

Kier has set a goal of having  a fruit tree planting in or near every village throughout the White Earth Nation.  All indications are Kier’s strategy may just work!
