Old Wadena Park Boardwalk

Valerie Berglund-Garcia, former USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) employee passed away in November, 2001 at age 33.  Valerie served as a soil conservationist in several Minnesota field offices before becoming the District Conservationist (DC) in Wadena, Minnesota.  It didn’t take Valerie long to get connected with Wadena county.  In a short period of time she was able to offer her expertise and passion for education and outreach program efforts by participating in a strategic planning process for the Old Wadena County Park.

Wlocal volunteers refurbished and installed the bog walk.hen Valerie passed away her family gave money to the Old Wadena County Park through the Wadena Historical Society for their use in constructing a Bog Walk in the park.  She was instrumental in the beginning stages of planning some educational outreach programs at Old Wadena Park while employed as the DC in Wadena County.

After several years of raising money for the Bog Walk Project, final construction took place in the spring, 2014. Several members of the community played a role in removing the old docks, and local volunteers refurbished and installed the bog walk.

Valerie’s husband, Cruz and their youngest son Derek were on hand for the Old Wadena Park Boardwalk ribbon cutting ceremony. Valerie’s family was happy to see how her dream of creating a Board walk was finally a reality for the community of Wadena County.
