Soils training leads to State FFA soils champions

For the last several years, Joe Kristoff, Area Resource Soil Scientist in Marshall, Minnesota has been providing soils training to the local Westbrook Walnut Grove Future Farmers of America (FFA) Soil Team through their coach Linda Carter.  This is an assignment that Kristoff enjoyed a great deal.  This spring Kristoff worked one-on-one and in group settings with the WestBrook Grove FFA Soils Team members.

The Westbrook Walnut Grove FFA Soils team was named the State FFA Land Judging champions for Minnesota.

The WestBrook Grove FFA Agriculture Teacher and FFA Land Judging Team Advisor, Linda Carter fully supported this learning effort.  “Her dedication to her Land Judging team,” was evident said Kristoff.  “Carter worked tirelessly with the students to improve their knowledge of soils.

This year the hard work paid off.  The Westbrook Walnut Grove FFA Soils team was named the State FFA Land Judging champions for Minnesota.

Carter, Kristoff and several other local FFA teams spent time to focus in on learning soil basics such as soil texture and soil color.  “Knowing these basics helped the teams in other parts of the Land Judging contest such as with internal soil drainage and determining available water capacity,” said Kristoff.

Congratulations to Linda Carter, Morgan Dennistoun, Elizabeth Woelber, Mariha Olson and Abby Herding.  For additional information regarding how NRCS provided soils training please contact Joe Kristoff at (507)-537-0541.
