Artist Submissions Sought for USDA Poster Contest
EAST LANSING, March 21, 2013 - The U.S. Department of Agriculture is inviting American Indian artists in Michigan to submit original paintings to help commemorate American Indian/Alaska Native Heritage Month in 2013. One painting will be selected for a nationally-distributed poster.
The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) produces an annual poster to celebrate American Indian/Alaska Native Heritage Month in November. Each year a different state produces the poster and Michigan was selected for 2013.
“We are delighted that Michigan’s tribal heritage will be represented on the poster in 2013,” said NRCS State Conservationist Garry Lee.
The theme for the 2013 American Indian/Alaska Native Heritage Month poster is “Land of the Great WaterSustainer of Life.” Paintings must be submitted to the NRCS state office in East Lansing by June 21. Artists are asked to submit either oil or acrylic paintings on an 18 inch by 24 inch canvas. Artists are also asked to submit a written narrative with their painting. The selected artist will be paid $2,000 by NRCS for the painting and the rights to use the art for the 2013 poster.
Michigan was last selected to produce the poster in 1996. Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians member Debra Ann Pine’s painting, “We are the Keepers of the Seven Generations,” was selected for the 1996 Heritage Month poster. The American Indian/Alaska Native Heritage Month poster is distributed by NRCS offices nationwide during November.
If artists have questions about the competition or concerns on how to transport their artwork to East Lansing, please contact Sandy Penn, at 517-324-5261 or email@example.com. If those concerns involve the transport of the artwork, please make that contact no later than May 17, 2013. More information is also available at the NRCS-Michigan website at www.mi.nrcs.usda.gov.
The winner will be selected by July 19, 2013. Copies of the 2013 American Indian/Alaska Native Heritage Month Poster will be ready for distribution by Mid-October. Paintings should be shipped to: USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service, 3001 Coolidge Road, Suite 250, East Lansing, MI, 48823.
