Maine Bulletin 360-13-4

                                                                                              April 19, 2013

Subject:  PER - Annual Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day

Action Required By:  April 25, 2013

Purpose.   To provide information about “Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work” day at the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).

Expiration Date.  September 30, 2013

Thursday, April 25, 2013, has been designated nationally as “Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work” day.  This year’s theme is “Work in Progress”.  Please see the attached poster for your use in this event.  The Maine NRCS encourages employees to participate by bringing your family members, ages 8-18, to work to experience a workday within the NRCS and district offices.  Please obtain approval from your immediate supervisor.

This day will provide opportunities for you to share a typical work day with a child and will be an enjoyable learning experience for the children who participate.  It may also create an interest in conservation as a future profession.

There are several things a child can do while spending the day with you at work.  The tasks that they are assigned should be based upon age.  If a child is 14 years or older, you may want to sign them up for the Earth Team Volunteer Program.  Contact your area coordinator for an application and information about becoming a volunteer.

This day should meet three objectives:

  1. Show a child your job responsibilities at NRCS.
  2. Share with a child the knowledge and skills needed to meet job responsibilities.
  3. Allow a child to experience how daily work schedules are completed.

Schools across the nation have been informed of this national education program; however, you may want to contact your child’s school and let them know of your plans to participate in this event.

Safety should always be a priority when children are in the workplace.  Use common sense and provide supervision; keep children out of potentially dangerous areas and away from potentially dangerous equipment or activities.  Please be aware that only children age 14 and older who have been approved as Earth Team Volunteers are allowed to ride in government owned vehicles.

Contact.  If you have questions regarding “Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work" day, please contact Stephanie Landry, Human Resource Specialist at (207) 990-9502 or email Stephanie.landry@me.usda.gov;  for questions relating to the Earth Team Volunteer Program, contact Elaine Tremble, Earth Team Volunteer Coordinator at (207) 990-9569 or email Elaine.tremble@me.usda.gov.
