MAINE BULLETIN NO. ME 450-11-7

                                                                                                    January 18, 2011

Subject: TCH – Section IV of eFOTG

Purpose. Announcing revisions and additions to Section IV – B. Conservation Practices of eFOTG.

Expiration Date. September 30, 2011

Background. To announce the availability of a protocol for Bedstraw Control on permanent hay fields in the 2011 Organic Practice Payment Schedule, and the availability of a Jobsheet for the combination of required practices.

Explanation. The 2011 Organic Initiative Program Payment Practice Schedule contains an option for Herbaceous Weed Control (315) that is specifically for Bedstraw Control on permanent hay fields.

Eradication of Bedstraw is difficult. It entails not only killing the weed through tillage (for organic operations), but it is also critical to prevent seed production for an entire year prior to re-establishment of hay. Therefore, a three (3)-year protocol is required for this practice. This protocol requires a preparatory first year during which the field must be mowed three times to prevent seed production. The protocol includes Herbaceous Weed Control (315) conservation practice in combination with Pasture and Hayland Planting (512) conservation practice in a prescribed sequence which must be strictly followed. To ensure success, it is also critical that pH and fertility are appropriately addressed in accordance with Pasture and Hayland Planting (512) conservation practice.

This protocol is described in the new Jobsheet “Bedstraw Control, Tillage Method (Organic) (315 and 512)”. This Jobsheet is located in eFOTG – Section IV – Conservation Practices – Herbaceous Weed Control (315).
