                                                                                                        February 4, 2011

Subject: TCH – Forest Stand Improvement – Thinning (Code 666)

Purpose. To make a distinction between “thinning – average stands”, and “thinning – dense stands or wildlife” for Forest Stand Improvement in the program payment schedule.

Expiration Date. September 30, 2011

Background. On the Fiscal Year 2011 program payment schedule, Forest Stand Improvement payment scenario “thinning for wildlife” was modified to include thinning dense stands. This bulletin provides guidance on when to use the scenario for thinning dense stands.

Explanation.

The table below explains when to use the appropriate scenario.

If stand stocking is:

then use:

Hardwoods and softwoods with less than 3,000 stems per acre Thinning - average stands
Hardwoods and softwoods with greater than 3,000 stems per acre Thinning – dense stands or wildlife

Note: If the thinning activity is for wildlife, use the “dense stands or wildlife” scenario regardless of the stand stocking.
