This collection of Massachusetts engineering resources has been compiled for use by NRCS engineers in other states, consultants, and Massachusetts NRCS partners and employees. Additional documents may be added as they become available.

NRCS Engineering Field Tools website - a framework of engineering tools used to assist field office individuals plan and design commonly applied conservation practices. 

NRCS Animal Waste Management (AWM) software - a planning/design tool for animal feeding operations that can be used to estimate the production of manure, bedding, process water and determine the size of storage/treatment facilities.

NRCS Hydraulics and Hydrology Tools and Models - resources from the NRCS West National Technology Support Center in Portland, OR.

Massachusetts Engineering Field Handbook Chapter 2 (EFH-2) Supplement Number: MA-EFH2 - The purpose of this supplement is to help field staff use the most current rainfall data and rainfall distribution available for conservation practice design. It includes a link to “Extreme Precipitation in New York & New England” on the Cornell University website.

Technical Note 301: Runoff-Frequency: Peaks, Volumes, Timing for Low-Relief, Sandy “Cranberry Bog” Drainage Areas - An empirical procedure that estimates flood peaks, runoff volumes, and timing on drainage areas representative of the stream gaging stations watersheds used, bog sites with similar basin characteristics of forested land cover, slopes, stratified glacial drift deposits, and drainage areas. This methodology has limited applicability and must be used with full understanding of its limitations.

Standard Massachusetts Designs

The following standard drawings are approved for use in Massachusetts. They have been examined for technical adequacy but the responsibility for proper application remains with the user. Before using any of the standard drawings, the designer should verify that the standard is adaptable to the site and that the design limitations are not exceeded. All standard drawings must be part of a specific site design that is reviewed and approved by an individual with the appropriate approval authority.

The documents in the DWG column require AutoCAD or other computer aided design program. The documents in the PDF column require Acrobat Reader.
