Drought Recovery Initiative—Kansas is one of eight states that received Drought Recovery Initiative funding under the EQIP to support efforts to mitigate short-term or long-term drought relief for producers. The Drought Recovery Initiative in Kansas will emphasis assistance to producers with grazing lands health and livestock water concerns.

Edge-of-Field Water Quality Monitoring—The edge-of-field water quality monitoring project is an effort to help producers improve and/or verify the effectiveness of agricultural conservation practices and systems in their operation. Edge-of-field monitoring equipment will be installed to evaluate the quality of water draining from fields. Funding is provided for both monitoring system installation and also collecting and evaluating the data.

On-Farm Energy Initiative—Producers work with an NRCS approved Technical Service Provider (TSP) to develop Agricultural Energy Management Plans or farm energy audits that assess energy consumption on an operation. NRCS may also provide assistance to implement various recommended measures identified in the energy audit through the use of conservation practice standards offered through this initiative.

Organic Initiative—NRCS will assist producers with installation of conservation practices on agricultural operations related to organic production. Producers currently certified as organic, transitioning to organic, or National Organic Program exempt will have access to a broad set of conservation practices to assist in meeting their resource concerns and fulfilling many of the requirements in an Organic System Plan.

Seasonal High Tunnel Initiative—NRCS helps producers implement high tunnel structures that extend growing seasons for high value crops in an environmentally safe manner. High tunnel benefits include better plant and soil quality, and fewer nutrients and pesticides in the environment.

Water Quality Initiative—The National Water Quality Initiative will work in priority watersheds to help farmers, ranchers and forest landowners improve water quality and aquatic habitats in impaired streams. NRCS will help producers implement conservation and management practices through a systems approach to control and trap nutrient and manure runoff. Qualified producers will receive assistance for installing conservation practices such as cover crops, filter strips and terraces.

Water Quantity and Drought Pilot—USDA, through the NRCS, is initiating the Water Quantity and Drought Pilot in Kansas and Colorado under the EQIP to offer a new conservation practice option for producers who face drought-related natural resource concerns on their agricultural operations. This pilot is in addition to other efforts that USDA has initiated to address the impacts that drought is having upon the Nation’s farms and ranches. NRCS has developed the new interim conservation practice standard 758 (Structure Sediment Removal) that will support the removal of accumulated sediment from ponds in order to restore the water storage capacity and improve water quality on agricultural operations. Under this pilot, a producer may receive EQIP assistance for costs directly related to removal of accumulated sediment from ponds if sediment removal is the most efficient manner in which to address a producer’s needs.
