NRCS Offers Financial Assistance for Conservation Practices Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions
DES MOINES, IOWA, Jan. 29, 2013 – USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is offering financial assistance to Iowa agricultural producers for installing conservation practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Applications must be submitted by Feb. 15 to be eligible for priority funding. A second application cutoff date has also been set for March 15.
Through the Conservation Innovation Grant – Greenhouse Gas (CIG-GHG) project, NRCS will provide technical and financial assistance for conservation practices such as nutrient management, no-till, cover crops, and conservation crop rotations.
Only Iowa and Illinois – through a partnership between NRCS and The Fertilizer Institute – are participating in the CIG-GHG project. Sponsors hope to determine if there is an opportunity for grain farmers to participate in emissions trading markets by identifying reductions in N2O (Nitrous Oxide) emissions through improved fertilizer management.
Larry Beeler, NRCS assistant state conservationist for Programs in Iowa, says project participants will receive higher payment rates than typical Farm Bill Program participants who adopt new conservation practices. He adds that producers will be encouraged to share data with The Fertilizer Institute as part of their research.
Iowa crop growers annually apply fertilizers to millions of acres of cropland. Changing fertilizer application methods to better meet crop demands can have positive economic and environmental impacts.
Iowa’s farm sizes, cropping systems, fertilizer usage, and availability of technology make it an ideal location to test the process of generating emission reductions, says Theo Gunther of The Fertilizer Institute. “Iowa farms are well-positioned to adopt practice changes and demonstrate results,” said Gunther.
