North Star Steel of Iowa has a plant in Wilton with a beautiful six-acre prairie for a front lawn. This is the result of a lot of hard work from North Star Steel employees and help from students from Wilton High School.
Members of Wilton High School's "Students for the Earth" are sowing seeds to help fill in bare patches and increase the plant diversity in the prairie.
The prairie is periodically burned by North Star Steel to replicate a prairie's natural conditions. Prairie plants evolved with fire, and need to be burned every few year's to stay healthy.
Students plant flowers in the prairie to increase diversity and add some more native species. They also removed plants in an area that was being made into a trail and replanted the grasses and flowers at the high school to make another prairie there.
