DENVER, August 1, 2014- USDA Agencies in Colorado joined forces to support the launch of the second annual Colorado Proud “Choose Colorado Tour”. The 27-day, statewide road trip across Colorado’s agricultural landscape kicks-off with a farmers’ market offering fresh produce and statewide ag products and a community celebration.  Representatives from the Farm Service Agency (FSA), Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), and Rural Development (RD) were on hand to help support the important effort.

The Colorado Proud Program was created in 1999 by the state’s Department of Agriculture to promote Colorado food and ag products as well as highlight the importance of purchasing locally grown, raised and processed food.  By buying locally, people receive high quality fresh products and help Colorado's economy, local farmers, ranchers, greenhouses, manufacturers and processors in their area and around the state.

The 2014 tour will make 20 stops in 11 cities and will integrate agricultural communities and celebrate farmers and produce growers, while educating consumers along the way.  “Agriculture is a vital part of Colorado’s history,” said Colorado Commissioner of Agriculture, John Salazar. As such there many stories to be shared and the History of Colorado Center was instrumental in helping celebrate this year’s kickoff as well as help tell some of the stories surround the State’s agricultural landscape.

The History Colorado Center will host a free, two-day Colorado Day celebration that will include food, music, dance, hands-on activities and a chance to recognize how Colorado’s past has shaped the state and the people who live within it today.

The US Department of Agriculture and its agencies were proud to play a hands-on role in the 2014 kickoff.  Their participation in the Colorado Proud activities are yet another example of how the Department supports statewide and locally-led initiatives that are aimed at an increased quality of life for US citizens.  FSA, FNS, NRCS, and RD in Colorado are also collaboratively participating in the Feds, Feeds, Families national campaign and thru that effort as well will help spread the word and the Colorado Proud motto that buying locally is “Better for you. Better for Colorado.”
