Resource Concerns and Opportunities Checklist
Resource Concerns Description of Resource Problem No Problem Don't Know Comments
Soil

Check if Applicable

Water Erosion Water causes soil to move from the field, streambank, road, etc., off-site to ditches, streams, or ponds.
Wind Erosion Wind causes to move, resulting in damage to plants, air quality, etc.
Landslides Landslides or other slop failures occur or have occurred.
Compaction Soil is compacted, reducing water uptake and plant growth.
Organic Matter Soil organic matter has decreased.
Soil Contaminant Soil contains salts, heavy metals, selenium, asbestos, etc.
Water Quantity

Check if Applicable

Flooding or Ponding Flooding or ponding restricts land use.
Irrigation Water Use Use of irrigation water could be more efficient.
Sediment in Ditches and Water Bodies Sediment deposits in water bodies and reduces flow.
Water Quality

Check if Applicable

Water Quality Pesticides, nutrients, animal waste, salinity or other substances degrade ground or surface water quality.
Sediment and Turbidity Sediment from eroded fields ditches, roads, or streambanks degrades surface water quality.
Water Temperature/Dissolve Oxygen High water temps or low dissolved oxygen in surface waters do not allow water to be used for its intended purpose (e.g. fisheries, etc.)
Air Quality

Check if Applicable

Particulate Matter Dust, smoke and other fine particulate matter are suspended in air from farming operations, roads, etc.
Ammonia Animal manure and inorganic fertilizer put excessive ammonia into the air.
Chemical Drift Application of pesticides and other chemicals drift towards unintended non-targeted sites.
Ozone Use of diesel engines older than 1996.
Odors Land use produces offensive odors.
Plants

Check if Applicable

Noxious and Invasive Plants Land has noxious or invasive plants present.
Plant Health and Vigor Plants do/do not produce the yields, quality, and ground cover desired.
Wildlife Hazard High fuel loadings are present and pose risks to life and property.
Animals, Fish and Wildlife

Check if Applicable

Food Food is inadequate to meet the requirements of fish and wildlife.
Cover/Shelter Wildlife cover and shelter is inadequate. For fish and other aquatic species, this includes lack of hiding areas and high water temperatures.
Water The quantity and quality of water is not adequate for fish and wildlife species.
Animals-Domestic

Check if Applicable

Feed and Forage Inadequate feed and forage to meet animal nutritional needs and production goals.
Shelter Livestock lack adequate protection.
Stock Water Livestock lack adequate drinking water or additional water is needed to improve grazing.
Human

Check if Applicable

Access to Labor and Equipment Do not have sufficient labor and equipment to meet management objectives.
Land Tenure/Size of Operation land ownership, tenancy status, or property size do not met objectives.
Conversion/Ag Land External or internal pressures exist to convert existing land to urban or other uses.
