Marshall Handcock, District Conservationist in DeWitt, Arkansas, and Gary Ives, rice farmer in DeWitt, Arkansas, meet to discuss his farm and the irrigation storage reservoir that was installed through the EQIP program.

Gary Ives purchased an 1,189 acre farm in DeWitt, Arkansas in 2008.  The Ives’s family has successfully installed a tail water recovery system along with an 80-acre irrigation storage reservoir with Environmental Quality Incentives Program funds.

Ives’ farm is located in a area with decling ground water levels. The reservoir is designed to have storage capacity of 720-acre feet.  Since the completion of their project, the Ives have used 385-acre feet of water from their storage reservoir to irrigate their corn, rice and soybean crops this summer.  Even though water is being pumped out of the reservoir to water crops, Ives is pumping water back into the storage reservoir daily from his tail water recovery system.

Ives said he is pleased with the project and with the benefits that he is receiving by completing this project.  He added this was the best improvement he could have made to his farm.

Ives farm is located in Arkansas County an identified Strike Force county in Arkansas.
