2011 Cache River MRBI/CCPI Project

Overview2011 Cache River MRBI Project Area

The Cache River - Mississippi River Basin Initiative (MRBI) Project is a voluntary program that provides financial and technical assistance to agricultural producers for addressing water quality concerns in the Cache River watershed.

The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in partnership with the Arkansas Association of Resource Conservation and Development Councils, Inc., has received funding for the initiative. This funding is available for landowners in portions of Monroe, St. Francis and Woodruff counties.

Collaborating partners are the Arkansas Natural Resources Commission; Woodruff County Conservation District; Monroe County Conservation District; Arkansas Association of Conservation Districts; The Nature Conservancy; and the University of Arkansas, Division of Agriculture.

Project Goal

The goal of the project is to assist agriculture producers in cultivating conservation measures and implementing practices to address nutrient management in the watershed. The project will provide agricultural producers the ability to improve their nutrient and water management runoff into the impaired watershed. The area lies within a 2010 MRBI Wetlands Reserve Enhancement Program (WREP) project. This will allow landowners to participate in both projects and implement the programs as they apply to the landscape to provide maximum benefit to the land by restoring wetlands, enhancing wildlife habitat and maintaining agricultural productivity.

Conservation Practice Funding

Funding will be available to eligible landowners through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). NRCS will provide cost-share for a variety of conservation practices for the purpose of reducing the amount of nutrient runoff and soil erosion associated with agricultural production. Land and producer eligibility, adjusted gross income, and all other program criteria for participation in EQIP must be met to participate in this initiative. Agricultural lands are eligible for enrollment in the initiative.
