This 52 acre easement is located within the Mississippi River Levee at Helena, Ark. The entire property floods on an annual basis. Flood damage on this site includes sedimentation, scouring and crop damage.
The property is adjacent to several wetlands reserve program easements and will link them together. This linking will expand the wildlife habitat available in the area by creating wildlife corridors.
Proposed restoration on this site includes the establishment of bottomland hardwood trees. This restoration will cost an estimated $192 per acre or $9,962 total.
Be enrolling this property in EWPP-FPE, 34 acres of annually flooded cropland will be taken out of production and commodity and disaster payments on those acres will be eliminated permanently.
Placing an easement on this property utilizing funding through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will protect or improve habit for three threatened or endangered species found in the area. These include the least tern, the pallid sturgeon and several endangered mussels.
Option Agreement to Purchase signed Aug. 15, 2009.
Easement funds were obligated Aug. 15, 2009.
Estimated closing date – October 18, 2010.
Restoration funds – obligated September 22, 2010.
Construction is scheduled to begin October 1, 2010.
