Earth Day 2011 will be a day to remember for about 250 students and 30 teachers at Smiths Station Elementary.

The April 21st Earth Day event was planned to help instruct students about the environment.  Ten representatives from local and federal agencies and others interested in the environment set up and gave presentations in tents along the perimeter of the school grounds.  The students rotated among the exhibitors.

The Lee County NRCS/SWCD set up a booth that featured the Enviroscape.  DC Jason Gardner, DAC Dana Sizemore, Technician Jesi King and Earth Team volunteer Ann Miller took turns educating the children on how to protect the environment.  The interaction with the Enviroscape allowed the children to visually see how soil erosion, pesticides, and runoff impact a watershed and helped them learn ways to protect the environment.
