AL Bulletin 190-14-2
Date: November 13, 2013
Subject: ECS – Soil Health training
Purpose: To announce Soil Health training in Alabama and specify employee attendance requirements
Expiration Date: December 30, 2013
The NRCS recently began a campaign to focus on Soil Health. This effort emphasizes four major principles:
Diversify soil biota with crop diversity
Manage more by disturbing the soil less
Growing a living root year-round
Keep the soil covered as much as possible
By focusing on soil health, and adopting the above concepts, landowners can make positive impacts on every major resource concern including potential increases in farm productivity and profitability. While this campaign takes advantage of the agency’s core brand strength--soil science and the management of soil for long-term improvement--it is important that all field employees have the basic framework to use in selling conservation. This training is intended to cover the benefits of soil health and to give NRCS employees tools to help promote this important initiative.
Action required by Field Employees:
All conservation planners and staff involved in conservation delivery and technical support related to soil health must attend one of the three sessions in the locations listed below. Field employees who are unable to attend must get supervisor approval and make arrangements with their ASTC-FO to make up the course material. Partner employees and Technical Service Providers are welcome and encouraged to attend this training.
December 3 – Cullman County Electric Cooperative Building, 1749 Eva Road NE, Cullman, AL
December 4 – Petals from the Past, 16034 County Road 29, Jemison, Alabama
December 5 – Tom Harbin Ag. Center, Airport Road/County Road 57, Luverne, AL
Employees who attend this training would earn 5 hours of continuing education credit that can be applied to the 60 hours required every three years for maintaining Certified Planner status. CCA points will also be available.
Each session will start at 9:00 am and end at approximately 3:00 pm. A draft Agenda is attached. Questions about this training should be directed to Eric Schwab at 334-887-4548.
