Description

This painted relief map was created using GTOPO30 elevation data from the U.S. Geological Survey. More information on this dataset can be found at the following website: http://edcdaac.usgs.gov/gtopo30/gtopo30.asp The elevation data was transformed into a painted relief image using a process documented by Jeffery Nighbert of the Bureau of Land Management. This process was presented as a poster at the '95 ESRI User Conference. The State Soil Geographic (STATSGO) Database was used to overlay water bodies on the painted relief map.

Cautions for this Product:
The elevation data used to make this map has a coarse resolution (30 second arcs) and should not be used at less than regional scales.

Definitions

STATSGO:
The State Soil Geographic (STATSGO) database is made by generalizing detailed soil survey data. The mapping scale is 1:250,000 (1:1,000,000 for Alaska). The level of mapping is designed to be used for broad planning and management uses covering state, regional, and multi-state areas. STATSGO map units average from 7,000 to 60,000 acres in size and have a minimum size of 1,544 acres.
