NRCS 2008 Pollinator Field Day

NRCS and its partners celebrated National Pollinator Week at the NRCS National
Plant Materials Center (NPMC) in Beltsville, Maryland. Speakers described
the benefits of pollinators, participated in tours of the NPMC, and viewed
exhibits that demonstrated how NRCS and its partners support pollinators in the
Chesapeake Bay watershed.
USDA Deputy Under Secretary for Natural Resources and Environment Gary Mast gave
the keynote presentation for the event. NRCS Pollinator Coordinator Doug
Holy and Chief of the Plant Protection and Weed Management Section for the
Maryland Department of Agriculture Carol Holko also spoke at the event.
NPMC activities highlighted included landscaping with native plants, NRCS plant
selection – grass-leaved golden aster, Maryland wildflower studies, Crider
Garden of Conservation Plants, rain gardens - planting for diversity and water
quality, and cover crops – (buckwheat).
