As part of theNational Soil Survey Center (NSSC) ongoing outreach effort to introduce NRCS web-based tools to a non-traditional customer base, NSSC staff recently exhibited at The American Society of Landscape Architects national conference in San Francisco, California.

In an effort to increase awareness and use of the agency’s soils, energy-saver, and plant information databases, NSSC staff members along with California soil scientists spent two days describing the work done by NRCS and demonstrating the web-based tools using two internet connected computer stations enhanced with plasma screens for easy viewing.  These hands-on workstations allowed visitors to learn about NRCS and how to use the online tools.  Learning NRCS products and assistance are available free of charge was an added bonus to an already overwhelmingly positive reaction by participants, many of whom provided constructive input that will be used to enhance the NRCS Web-based tools.

NSSC staff members are scheduled to continue their outreach effort this spring with exhibits and demonstrations at the American Planners Association and the American Realtors’ Associations.
