Texas NRCS State Conservationist Dr. Larry D. Butler was recently honored as an outstanding alumnus by the Texas Tech University Range, Wildlife & Fisheries Department.

Department Chair Dr. Ernest Fish presented Dr. Butler with a plaque for his achievements in providing leadership in the preservation and conservation of the natural resources for Texas through his distinguished service with the NRCS. He was recognized by the department for his dedication and accomplishments in the field of agricultural sciences and natural resources.

Dr. Butler earned his Bachelor of Science degree in wildlife management from Texas Tech University in 1974. He subsequently earned a Master of Agriculture degree at Texas A&M University and a Ph.D. degree in range science from Utah State University.

Known as a conservation leader, Dr. Butler has been serving in his career for 32 years. Appointed NRCS Texas State Conservationist in November 2002, he leads the largest NRCS staff and budget in the nation. During his tenure, record numbers of landowners have received practical help with conservation planning and funding assistance.

Previously, Dr. Butler was the NRCS Grazing Lands Technology Institute director with national responsibility for development and transfer of technology relative to grazing lands within the NRCS. He also served as NRCS regional range conservationist in Portland, Oregon for 13 western states. Prior to these positions, he has served as soil conservationist, range conservationist, district conservationist, biologist, and area conservationist with NRCS in several locations across Texas.
