Earth Team Artists Create Backyard “Masterpiece”

For the past six years, the NRCS Plant Materials Center (PMC) and the Maryland
State office have teamed up to exhibit at the Maryland Home and Garden Show.
This year, 17 National Honor Society students from River Hill High School in
Clarksville, joined
the partnership. Volunteering more than 120 hours by working in small groups
after school, the students with help from NRCS State and PMC staff, created a
16’ X 18’museum-quality backyard conservation diorama-type display. By using a
number of sophisticated design and construction techniques, the students created
a back yard scene exhibit. An actual garden, pond, and fence, depicting
conservation techniques, blended seamlessly into the background image of a house
and yard. It was a three-way, win-win situation as NRCS fielded a top-quality

exhibit produced by students who enjoyed the opportunity to put their talents to
work on a project that drew compliments from many at the Maryland Home
and Garden Show.
