KNIGHT ANNOUNCES FUNDING FOR AGRICULTURAL MANAGEMENT ASSISTANCE

WASHINGTON, Aug. 19, 2002—Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Chief Bruce Knight today announced the release of $1.5 million for Agricultural Management Assistance (AMA). This is in addition to the $7 million released earlier this year.

“This program helps farmers comply with environmental standards and encourages sound conservation on America’s working land,” Knight said. “These funds will help farmers protect the nation’s water quality and quantity.”

AMA is a voluntary conservation program available in 15 states where participation in the Federal Crop Insurance Program is historically low. NRCS state offices soon will receive funding needed to provide cost-share payments to farmers for conservation practices such as water management, water quality and erosion control.
