Rules for Brainstorming

Team Start-up Kit

"Brainstorming" is a widely used process to generate ideas and/or to gather information. It allows a group to quickly explore a question which has no specific answer or solution. In the process of idea generation, no judgments of any kind are offered; quantity is important. The process encourages creativity and gathers numerous insights quickly. Brainstorming is a good technique for developing options and broadening perspectives. The goal is idea/alternative/solution.

  • Ideas should be generated freely and volunteered "off the top of the head."
  • Practicality is not a criterion.
  • "Far out" ideas are welcomed.
  • No one should say "no" or "we tried that before" or "it won't work."
  • There should be no discussion, evaluation, debate of the relative merits.
  • All ideas are recorded.
